Where has the “Downtown Dollars” program been successful?

Program Successes

For the past 9 years, the community of Strathroy, Ontario (population 13,000) have been using “Downtown Dollars” with spectacular success. The very first year they transacted $2,000.00 and incrementally increased the amount every year. In December 2005, they provided a WHOPPING $70,000 in “Downtown Dollars” to local residents. In fact, it created a consumer frenzy whereby customers were lining up at the bank at 7:30AM to collect their dollars before they ran out. The bank transacted $20,000 the very first day of the 2005 launch. The impact of this venture on the local economy was dramatic. It created loyalty and an immediate positive jolt to the local economy.

Similarly, the town of Petrolia, Ontario (population 4,844) have implemented their version of “Downtown Dollars”. They began their program in 2004 with $2,000.00 and in 2005, they transacted $3,000 with the help of 3 financial institutions.

What could $70,000 worth of business do for your downtown merchants?

  1. It could be the difference between surviving and thriving for most independent merchants in the downtown area.
  2. With the advances in technology today, it presents an ideal opportunity to glean the e-mails and other pertinent information for future direct marketing messages.

What is Downtown Dollars?

Downtown Dollars is an incentive campaign whereby residents can obtain discounted “downtown dollars” at a local financial institution and spend them in the local downtown area. In other words, the resident pays $.90 cents for a $1.00 “Downtown Dollar”.
These dollars will then be transacted by residents in all Business Improvement Association businesses at their discretion.
